Perth Zoo – Saving Wildlife

The Perth Zoo has a 41–acre area to house 164 kinds of animal species and extensive botanical collections coming from all corners of the world. The massive area of the zoo is divided into three main exhibit zones and few minor exhibit areas. These exhibits are designed to imitate the natural habitat of the animals and utilise only passive barriers to all areas.

Perth Zoo opened to the public in 1898 and is located at South Perth, Western Australia. For more than a decade now, the Perth Zoo is recognised as one of the world’s most successful breeding programs for endangered species. They have been successfully breeding both indigenous Australian and International species that resulted in several births.

The Perth Zoo are partners to local and world conservation organisations that aim at saving wildlife. And, every time you come and visit, you’re showing support of their work in vital conservation.

Perth Zoo History

Here are some highlights to the history of Perth Zoo.

  • The original purpose of the zoo was to introduce European animals to Australia.
  • The first appointed director was Ernest Le Souef in 1897 who initiated in developing the barren land to become a zoo.
  • The site was mostly sandy which lacks water and nutrients so cartloads of manure were brought in to help fertilize the ground.
  • Ernest Le Souef started collecting more botanicals and animals as soon as the site was finished being built.
  • The 60 species of original palm collection still stands and they are now more than a 100 years old.
  • Today, the zoo still continues to grow their own crops for the animals such as lettuce, carrots, onions, lucerne, alfalfa and much more.
