Interstate Teams / Clubs in Adelaide – Adelaide Jets Water Polo Teams
Adelaide has one of the oldest water polo clubs in the Australian Water Polo League. The Adelaide Jets men’s team entered the League in 1991 during the second year of competition and have now clocked up 28 years of elite level water polo.
The Jets women’s team joined the women’s section of the league in 2004 during its first year of competition. They’ve now been playing water polo at elite level for 15 years.
Team players come from each of the state’s 4 water polo clubs – Adelaide Vikings, Eastern Saints, Henley Sharks and Tritons.
Interstate Teams / Clubs in Adelaide – Adelaide Thunderbirds Netball Team
Started in 1997, the Adelaide Thunderbirds are one of the original teams from the Commonwealth Bank Trophy, Australia’s former national level netball league. They transferred to the new ANZ Championship League in 2008 when it started, and are now part of the current national netball league – Suncorp Super Netball.
The Thunderbirds have taken out 4 premierships in total. They won in 1998 and 1999, the second and third years of national competition, and again in 2010 and 2013. The team also finishes in the top 3 most seasons, making them one of the most successful teams in the competition.
Interstate Teams / Clubs in Adelaide – The Southern Hotshots Hockey Team
The dominance of Australia’s men’s and women’s hockey teams internationally is proof that the Australian Hockey League is one of the most competitive and strongest domestic hockey leagues in the world.
The Southern Hotshots is South Australia’s men’s state team. Along with the Southern Suns, SA’s women’s state team, it’s one of the international level domestic hockey teams that regularly supply players for the world champion Hockey Australia national teams. In 2017 the teams supplied 7 and 8 players for the national squads respectively.
Although they haven’t won any championships, the team has finished in 3rd place in 1991, 1992 and 1996.
Interstate Teams / Clubs in Adelaide – Adelaide Bite Baseball Team
The Adelaide Bite is a pun on the Great Australian Bight, a distinctive feature in the shape of the Australian continent. The waters off Adelaide are also home to Great White Sharks, one of which is part of the team’s logo.
The Bite are Adelaide’s state baseball team. They’re one of the 8 original teams in the Australian Baseball League, having been formed in 2009. The team is currently owned by the Adelaide Football Club.
Over their competitive lifetime the team has finished second in 2015 and 2016, and third in 2012 and 2017.
Interstate Teams / Clubs in Adelaide – Adelaide 36ers Basketball Team
If you’ve often wondered how the Sixers got their name, wonder no more! On December 28th 1836 the Colony of South Australia was officially sworn into being and the date is celebrated by the Proclamation Day public holiday each year.
The Adelaide 36ers were founded in 1982 and are South Australia’s only team in the Australian National Basketball League. They’re currently the 3rd most successful team in the League with 4 championship wins all up behind Perth Wildcats (8) and Melbourne United (5).
So there you have it – some of the best interstate teams / clubs in Adelaide. Further to these teams, the state fields at least one team in most of Australia’s various national competitions.
